Brief Background

Lux Radio was established in 2007 under the chairmanship of the late Prof. Joe W. Mulbah with funding assistance from The Open Society Initiatives, OSIWA and the United Nations Development Program, UNDP.  Like the student newspaper, The Varsity Pilot, the aim was to complement classroom learning by providing hands-on training for students majoring in Broadcast Journalism in the department. Being cognizant of the practical nature of the practice (journalism), and that theoretical knowledge was not enough to prepare students for the challenges that come with job (e.g., news gathering, writing, editing, reporting skills, and deadline pressures), the department established Lux FM in 2007 following an inaugural ceremony in 2007 by then President of the Republic of Liberia, Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. The station operated on the assigned frequency, 106.6.

An unfortunate fire incident incident in March 2015 destroyed the entire facility taking away from the students the best opportunity for practical training. Students would have to wait for five years to see that station rebuilt by the University due to funding challenge.

The station provides hands on training for University of Liberia Mass Comm students majoring/specializing in Radio broadcast journalism while also carrying on professional broadcasting. Additionally, Lux FM helps the University reach its stakeholders including students, faculty and employees, and the general public.

  • To effectively propagate the policies, programs and activities of the University of Liberia to its stakeholders.
